    In college, my design professors tried to get me to understand the value of sketching, but I didn't want to hear it. Why would I want to sketch in a silly little book when I have this computer, with all the design software I could ever want, and more fonts than I could possibly know what do with?<br />

    For years I fought the idea. Whenever a new design project came along I'd get out my sketchbook and hunt for just the right pen, and go through the motions of sketching. The result was usually one idea partially drawn out and then hours and hours on the computer refining that one idea.

Moreover, I tried to push them as much as possible in turning the results from their exploration into material that can be relevant for design (beyond mere “results”).<br />

There is certainly room for improvement but it was good to spend some time with all these students and see how they can appropriate these elements. My role here was not to turn them into ethnographers. Instead I wanted to see them taking these techniques and using them for their own projects/purposes.

   AgaMatrix, maker of the Jazz blood glucose meter, already has an extremely popular free database app for the iPhone available that lets you manage and track your diabetes ’scores’ which is an important part of managing the disease. But until now, or very soon at least, users have had to manually enter the results from the meter into the application. Not a giant inconvenience mind you, but one that’s soon to be a thing of the past thanks to the company’s new WaveSense Direct Connect Cable which allows the glucose meter to transfer the results directly to their app on the iPhone, iPod Touch or the iPad. The cable is currently pending review and approval from the FDA, but when available it will sell for around $25-30.
